WHAT OUR FOUNDING FATHERS
THOUGHT ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS

Approximately one hundred years after  George Fox wrote about the value of all people, our Founding Fathers wrote about value of people and their  human rights. Here are some of the things that they believed.

*A free people cannot survive under a republican constitution unless they remain virtuous and morally strong; the most promising method of securing a virtuous people is to elect virtuous leaders.

*Without religion the government of a free people cannot be maintained.

*All things were created by God, therefore upon him all mankind are equally dependent, and to him they are equally responsible. All mankind were created equal.

The Founders knew that in these three ways, all mankind are  treated as: 1. Equal before God. 2. Equal before the law. 3. Equal in their rights.

*The proper role of government is to protect equal rights, not provide equal things.

*Mankind are endowed by God with certain unalienable rights. These  rights of the people are most likely to be preserved if the principles of government are set forth in a written Constitution.

Thomas Jefferson understood “unalienable rights” as fixed rights given to us by our Creator rather than by government. Also the rights are inseparable from us: they are part of our humanity.

In a word, the government did not give them and therefore cannot take them away, but the government still strains at ways to suppress them.

TRUMP AND THE FOUNDING FATHERS

It is sometimes said that a people get the leaders that they deserve. Trump certainly is not a virtuous man.

Trump has spoken against minorities in a disparaging way. People who have a lot money and oil stocks are the only ones who seem to have equal rights.

EVERYONE IS VALUABLE,
EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US

WHO SAYS?

SEVENTEENTH CENTURY

QUAKER GEORGE FOX

THE FOUNDING FATHERS

THE UNITED NATIONS

DONA ANA NAACP

DONA ANA COUNTY DEMOCRATS

ME

EVERYONE IS VALUABLE

I am a Quaker and an anthropologist.  Quakers do not believe in original sin; they believe in the innate goodness of all people.  It is possible to speak to the God, the good in all people. We can empathize with others.

Anthropologist believe in the innate intelligence and and creativity of all people.

Both believe that all people are valuable.

QUAKERS BELIEVE THAT
ALL PEOPLE ARE VALUABLE

George Fox, Quaker Mystic and Social Revolutionary,  believes that all people are valuable.

THEY ARE CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD AND CHRIST THE LIGHT LIVES WITHIN THEM AND LOVES, PROTECTS AND TEACHES THEM.

Why are all people so valuable?

We are created in the Image of God, Christ lives within us and died for us, and God loves each and every one of us.

Everyone can have spiritual experiences,  be a mystic and know and love God.

GENUINE EQUALITY

Although he lived in a society with a rigid class structure, George Fox was able to see that everyone was equal before God. This was a practical, real equality where women did not have to stay at home and do the dishes while men went out and to did more interesting things.

Fox was able to see genuine equality for everyone rather than individuals confined to strict classes. First and most important is that there is equal access to God for all. The Lord's people are made up of both men and women. Both men and women have the same sorts of responsibilities. They also have similar opportunities to use the gifts that God has given them.

Because God lives within them as the Light, and they are created in His image. They are members of His family, they are equal. Men and women of every religion, skin color and ethnicity participate in this equality.

Fox also sees that all individuals have a right to liberty of conscience.

EVERYONE MAY HAVE SPIRITUAL,

CREATIVE INSIGHTS

Fox believes in the value of all people and that everyone may have spiritual insights. He doesn’t say that the most learned should speak for the group but that each individual should speak.

This universality, brotherhood of all people, is demonstrated in the Quaker peace testimony. The human family is one, children of one Father. How can any one war against the members of one’s own family? Fox believed in the worth of all persons; war is the most terrible destroyer of this worth. .

How is it possible to do this? As always for Fox, Christ is the answer. For through Him we are made more than conquerors. We trust in God’s Power and Wisdom and have patience and will have dominion over all.

WHY ARE PEOPLE SO VALUABLE?

CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD

We are created in the image of God so we can be like Him: peaceful, loving and good.

We are in the Image of God in that we can be pure, holy, and righteous

AN IMAGE IS A COPY

An image is a copy though, not the real thing. We certainly are not God who is radically different from us. However, we are in God's image in that we know right from wrong, good from evil. We are capable of loving others, of living a peaceful life.

To be created in the Image of God means that we are genuinely  human and can be our best selves. We can live a full life and use the gifts that God has given us.  Our decisions are not completely selfish and self-serving but do consider other people’s wants and needs.

Both men and women are created in the Image and Likeness of God.   If we are married we are “meet helps,”working together in the image of God.

Part of being in the Image of God is that we can share in the day to day process of creation, as kings and queens over all creatures.

WE ARE CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD;

CHRIST THE LIGHT ABIDES IN US

Because we are created in the Image of God and Christ the Light lives within us and enlightens us, there is genuine equality for everyone.

GOD’S KINGDOM

Everyone may live in God’s Kingdom which is both “come” and “coming.” It is “come;” present within each person who tries to do God’s will. It is also “come” with Christ reigning over the world. The Kingdom “coming.” is the final stage of humanity. This Kingdom will never be destroyed.

WE CAN SPEAK TO THE GOD IN OTHERS;

THE GOODNESS AND PURITY IN THEM

The truth and goodness within one person speaks to the truth and goodness in the other person. We can understand others, have empathy with them, respond to that which is equal, just, and true in ourselves and in every other person. We can be courteous and show respect for the other person.

Our most important jobs is to treat everyone justly and fairly. We are created in the Image of God. God is just.  So we may be just too.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

A life of EQUALITY AND VALUE FOR EVERYONE is not possible unless we live a simple life.  The two essential elements of the simple life are equality and sharing. Because God creates us in His Image and abides in us as Christ the Light, we are members of His family.  This makes everyone equal. Men and women of every religion, skin color and ethnicity participate in this equality.

Sharing means to take only our fair share in the first place and then give away our surplus.

A simple life has God as its center and one main direction, to serve Him, to do His will in our lives.  It is a plan, consciously made, to have the physical part of life under discipline so that there will be more time for the spiritual: time to say our prayers and meditate, time for family, time to read or study. But garden, house and job are also ways of loving God and showing this love.

A simple life style is one of the few peaceful alternatives that gives all people the possibility of a life of dignity and respect. A simple life is an answer to individual problems and the world's ills. If everyone lived a simple life, the world would work much better, be a more peaceful place.

TRUMP AND THE SIMPLE LIFE

It is impossible to think of Donald Trump living a simple life, sharing with others, having empathy with them.

Each and every one of us is valuable!

EVERYONE IS VALUABLE!!

In Essence: Lets take a look at these impressive documents.

QUAKER IDEAS OF EQUALITY
SEVENTEENTH CENTURY

George Fox, Seventeenth Century mystic and social revolutionary, was a remarkable person. Based on his passionate love of God and Christ, he actually believed in the value and equality of all people.  He makes it sound simple. Everyone speaks to the God, the good in others. We can do this by calling on the purity within us.

We can witness too, and answer the peace and goodness in everyone. Even captives, persons in prison, have the responsibility of answering that of God in others. No matter what our social and economic position is in this life, we treat all people justly according to that of God in them. If we are in business, we speak the truth. We must wrong no one, deal honestly with  everyone, keep our word, keep accurate accounts, use just weights and measures.
s.
In short. The good in one person speaks to the good in the other person. They are able empathize, see the other person’s point of view and want the best for them.

Lack in Me

I am sure that it is a lack in me but I find it very difficult to speak to the peace and goodness in Pearce; I find it impossible in Trump.

The Founding Father’s Ideas of Equality

The Founding Fathers believed in God and that He gave us our equality so it cannot be taken away from us. It is self-evident which means that it is obvious, doesn’t need to be explained, inherent. permanent, an essential attribute.

They were also influenced by nature.  Can you imagine what it must have been like to live in America when the whole country was a beautiful, wonderful National park.

United Nations Document on Human Rights

Although they believe in the freedom of religion, the United Nations Document on Human Rights, emphasizes human interests and dignity, human fulfillment.

NAACP MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.

They want to educate all persons as to their constitutional rights. They want to take all lawful action to make this happen; they try to achieve equality of rights by democratic processes. To seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights. To seek elimination of racial discrimination.

In short they want this country to obey its laws – that are already on the books and add new laws –  on protecting all valuable citizens and giving them equal opportunities.

A DONA ANA DEMOCRAT (ME)

I think that to have equality and value for all, people living in Dona Ana County must have the opportunity to get a good job. Then everyone  can feed, clothe, educate and give shelter to their families.

I know that you are thinking HERE COMES SOLAR ENERGY AGAIN.  i KNOW, i KNOW.  But I do think that we have this wonderful renewable resource, sunlight, which we don't take full advantage of.  Dona Ana County is the sunshine, the sunniest county! If someone made a list of the sunniest counties, we would be at the top of the list.

What can we do?

Fully utilize the excellent program in Solar Energy at Dona Ana Community College.  Recent high school graduates, veterans, someone looking for a career change, retirees can find training here. Make it your business to find out about their program for a certificate or an AA degree.

Find out about other resources in the county through job fairs and the State Work Force Program.

If, God forbid, Trump were to win, and if we could produce our own electricity!!  We could be independent in a way that we can't be now; we could hunker down throughout the storm.

If Hilary Clinton wins, we could help our country to be less dependent on foreign oil.

BASIC RIGHTS

It seem to me that today we are secure in such rights as freedom of religion and the right to protection for our person.

DARK SHADOW

The dark shadow hanging over us is, of course, Trump's horrible, awful hate. It is obvious what we can do about that. See that Trump  and Pearce, who is so much like him, don't win in Dona Ana County!!

UNITED NATIONS  HUMAN RIGHTS

All people everywhere have the same human rights which no one can take away.
This is the basis of freedom, justice and peace in the world.

This Declaration affirms the dignity and worth of all people, and the equal rights of women and men. The rights described here are the common standard for all people everywhere.

Every person and nation is asked to support the understanding and respect for these rights, and to take steps to make sure that they are recognized and observed everywhere, for all people. Here are some of these human rights.

*Everyone is born free and equal and with dignity.

[Isn't this a wonderful statement? It embodies everything necessary: freedom, equality and dignity.]

*You should never be discriminated against for any reason.

*All people have rights, whatever our differences.

*Everyone has the rights to life, liberty and security.

*No one shall be held in slavery or servitude.

*No one shall be subjected to torture.

*You have the right to be treated as a person in the eyes of the law.

*No one has the right to intrude in your private life or interfere with your home and family without lawful reasons.

*You have the right to freedom of movement within your country.

*You have the right to seek and to enjoy asylum from persecution in other countries.

*You have the right to marry and to raise a family.

*You have the right to own property and it cannot randomly be taken away from you.

*You have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and to peacefully express those beliefs in teaching, practice and worship.

*You have the right to freedom of peaceful assembly.

*You have the right to take part in the government of your country.

*You have the right to work, to good working conditions, to equal pay for equal work and to form and join unions.

*You have the right to a decent life, including enough food, clothing, housing, medical care and social services.

*You have the right to an education.

*NO ONE SHALL BE

SUBJECTED TO TORTURE

Trump Amps Up His Call For Torture: ‘We’re Going To Have To Do Things That Are Unthinkable’

"I'd bring back waterboarding," Trump said during a February 7 debate. "And I'd bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding."

FREEDOM OF RELIGION

Trump claimed in his acceptance speech to have the backing of the Christian Right.

*You have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and to peacefully express those beliefs in teaching, practice and worship.

CHRISTIAN RIGHT POLITICAL PRIORITIES

These individuals have the right to their own religious and political beliefs but it is not a proper agenda for the President of the United States.

1) What they want: A rollback on environmental protections. This is but one of many ways the religious right has merged its interests with that of corporate America.

2) What they want: For the government to take money from the public school system and give it to private schools in the form of vouchers.

3) What they want: No Equal Rights Amendment.

4) What they want: To end the teaching of evolution in schools.

5) What they want: To restrict access to abortion and contraception. They are opposed to abortion rights, but recently attacks on contraception access have been increasing.

STEVE PEARCE IS RUNNING
FOR CONGRESS AGAIN

HE HAS DONE GREAT HARM TO DONA ANA COUNTY AND SHOULD NOT BE RETURNED TO CONGRESS.

DONA ANA COUNTY NEW MEXICO

Sunshine County

Sunniest County

Dona Ana County, the 2nd Congressional district, is a poor county with high unemployment. What we do have is sunshine!! Lots and lots of sun.

Las Cruces has 350 days of sunshine in a year;  Albuquerque, 278.
El Paso, one of the sunniest large cities in the world, is just down
the road a piece. The same sun shines on El Paso and Las Cruces.

In the future when they publish a list of sunniest counties, Dona Ana County will be first; in the future when they publish a list of counties with the most Solar Energy Power, Dona Ana County will be first, and way out ahead of any other county.

PRESIDENT OBAMA

When President Obama made promises as a candidate, of wide scale solar installations to lessen this countries dependence on foreign oil and, as a very nice bonus, to provide training and jobs, I envisioned Dona Ana County pretty well blanketed with solar energy stations.

He has done more than any other president at a national level. One I liked very much was the BLM leasing geothermal rights to the greenhouse industry on land near Radium Springs. (Radium Springs is not too far down the road from where I live.)

He still has a few months in office. What about a large federal installation here?  I don’t mean jobs for a few people.  I mean several hundred people to be trained in renewable energy. If it were a federal installation, we would not be trampled into the ground by El Paso Electric.

The State of New Mexico

There is a State Work Force Program.  When I spoke to the owner of a local firm that installs solar energy panels, she told me that there were very few jobs for their training program through the State Work Force Program.

ONE THING THAT WE DO HAVE IS

THE SOLAR ENERGY PROGRAM AT

DONA ANA COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!

The Solar Energy Program at Dona Ana Community College is a very good answer. This program provides the student with a strong foundation in solar and alternative energy. A student may earn a Certificate and/or an AA degree in Solar Energy.  What I hope is that Dona Ana Democrats will see if we knew of anyone who might be interested in and able to pursue this program. Then recommend it to them.

You can get information about this program at

dacc.mnsu.edu.

1 Click on Program Studies in the upper left hand corner.
2. Chose Environment and Energy Technology from the alphabetical list.
3. The student may work for an Associates Degree (67 credits) or a Certificate of Completion. (18-31 credits)
4. At the top the student may click on How to Apply or to get Information on Financial Aid.

For further information, call the Program office at 575-527-7590.

New Mexico Senators Udall and Heinrich

Senators Udall and Heinrich obtained a $884,00 grant from the National Science foundation for the University of New Mexico to collaborate with Central New Mexico Community College to develop a certificate program in green construction technologies. This new program will help students gain the skills they need for the jobs of the future. This funding will help to pay for their training. With its incredible solar and wind potential, New Mexico has an opportunity to become a major producer and exporter of clean power.

From what I have read it seems like a very good program. But why didn’t they do something similar for us?  They owe us big time.  One or both of them should help us sponsor a Solar Power Job’s Fair in Dona Ana County.  They could give the speech that they gave in Albuquerque.  It was an excellent speech.  They could also cheer the Democratic candidates on.

Congressman Steve Pearce

It goes without saying that Congressman Pearce is not interested in training and jobs in solar and wind energy for his constituents. He has claimed that most of the solar and wind companies go bankrupt.  In fact less than one percent fail.

I called his office and asked him about his solar energy policy. He never returned my call.

Defeating Steve Pearce

Defeating Steve Pearce. There are more Republican than Democrats in congress.  Steve Pearce, a Republican for the 2nd Congressional District, is running for reelection.  When he runs for the House, he always seems to win.  He is a clone, a soul mate of Trump’s.  He would be a strong ally of his if – God forbid – Trump were elected. If Hilary Clinton is elected, he would be a strong opponent.

I AM NOMINATING STEVE PEARCE
FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF MALE CHAUVINISTS INTERNATIONAL

I am nominating Steve Pearce for the Presidency of Male Chauvinists International. In his book, Just Fly the Plane, Stupid!, he writes that both the military chain of command and the family unit need structure in which everyone plays his or her role. He is the General; she is the Private. (There is a rigidity and lack of love and compassion in this which is very upsetting to me.)

He really is soft and cuddly.

He also believes that the wife’s role is to submit and as he says this is biblical. It is:

EPHESIANS 5:22- 33.

Submission should be easy to a loving husband, one who loves his wife as Christ loves the Church. Ephesians 5 does not allow the husband to be selfish or domineering. The wife submits in things that are right and lawful and God honoring– really she submits in everything.  So the husband can be whatever he is. He does not have to pass an intelligence or a kindness test.

THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT

The Greek which the King James Version translates “submit to” is hypotassesthai.  Arndt and Gingrich, the most commonly used New Testament dictionary today, translates the word “subject oneself, be subjected or subordinated, obey,” and give examples of submission to parents, masters, church officials, secular authorities.

It also speaks of voluntary submission in love, in Ephianes 5:21,  all that is good.

The husband’s duty is given as “loving” his wife, “as his own body.”   This can be taken to mean, “Don’t hit your wife”; thus the wife is to be presented “without spot or wrinkle and ” without “blemish.”  Wife beating was socially approved of at the time of the New Testament, and till much later, unfortunately.

RESPECT AND FEAR

The New International Bible translates Ephesians 5: 33: the wife must respect her husband. The Greek word that is translated respect can also be translated “fear.”

In short, a husband is to love his wife and not beat her.

HELPMEETS

Helpmeets, or Meethelps is also in the Bible. Genesis 2:18. It means that a husband and wife are allies, helping each other, admiring one another. Both may use the gifts that God has given them.

As I have said before I am a Quaker and helpmeets is a Quaker word.  George Fox, the Seventeenth Century human founder of Quakers, believed in the equality of all people. He put up a spirited defense for women that they could speak in Meeting; they shouldn’t have to stay at home and do the dishes while men go out and to do more  interesting things.

WHATEVER KIND OF RELATIONSHIP PEARCE AND HIS WIFE SHARE IS THEIR BUSINESS AND NO ONE ELSE’S

It doesn’t matter how he demeans his wife. That is between him and her.  But when he demeans the women in his constituency, this is a very different thing.

PEARCE CAN BE AN EGALITARIANHE HARMS BOTH THE MEN AND WOMEN OF HIS CONSTITUENCY EQUALLY

1. He voted against unemployed New Mexicans. He advises unemployed individuals to take out Payday Loans. (He seems to be a good friend of the  Payday Loan industry.)

2. He voted to cut the funds of SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Many New Mexicans depend on this program. Although employed some New Mexicans still need SNAP so that they can feed their families adequately.

3. He voted for HR5, the “Letting Students Down Act” which would cut a great deal of money from educational funding, making it harder for students to complete educations that become more costly each year. If that wasn’t bad enough, HE VOTED TO INCREASE INTEREST ON STUDENT LOANS.

BUILDING A WALL BETWEEN MEXICO AND THE U.S.

In 2008, before Trump, Steve Pearce voted for building a wall between the United States and Mexico.

THE JOB OF ANY GOVERNMENT IS TO ENFORCE JUSTICE AND PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR ITS CITIZENS!!

STEVE PEARCE IS THE INCUMBENT AND

HE IS RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION

HE HAS HARMED THE PEOPLE OF

DONA ANA COUNTY AND SHOULD NOT REPRESENT US IN CONGRESS AGAIN

Steve Pearce was born in 1947, which makes him 69 years old. (He can get Medicare.) He votes with the Republican Party on the majority of bills but he leans farther to the right than some of his Republican colleagues. He is running for re-election this year, 2016. Steve Pearce, shares many of Trump’s beliefs.

He voted against the closure of the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

He strongly favors privatizing Social Security.

Older Americans should be able to look forward to social and economic justice so that they may enjoy lives of dignity, fulfillment and security. Under a privatized Social Security system, this would not happen. There are many poor people in Southern New Mexico: people who might possibly not have even had a bank account. They would be asked to manage their Social Security.

Pearce has contempt for the poor and tells them, like Marie Antoinette, to eat cake.

================================================================================================================================================
Top 5 industries that contributed
to his past campaigns:

Oil and Gas    $305,005
Retired    $121,415
Real Estate    $73,201
Commercial Banks    $71,399
Livestock  $70,717

From 1999- 2014 Leadership Pacs gave him $644, 022

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Justice means being fair.

When I think of Steve Pearce, I do not think of words like fair, kind, caring, dependable, and responsible to all his constituents.

He does not have a grand and wonderful vision of peace and justice for this country and its people. His vision is more limited to peace, justice and power for people like himself:  rich and predominantly white.

I don’t think of him as a man who tries to break down barriers that divide us and work so that our divisions are healed, and we may live in justice and peace.

TRUMP IS A DEMAGOGUE,

A WOULD-BE DICTATOR AND A FASCIST

WHAT IS A:

 DEMAGOGUE

A Politician Who Appeals to the Hates and Fears of People.

DICTATOR

A Ruler with total power over a County.

FASCIST

An Authoritarian Right-wing System of Government; Extreme Right-wing Authoritarian, or Intolerant Views or Practice.

Trump has no serious solutions to pressing problems just fanning of resentment and blame and anger and hate.  He not only shouts that we should hate everyone who is not just like ourselves but makes it our patriotic duty.

Trump is the worst, the most hateful candidate to ever run for the presidency. Dona Ana County Republicans have a lot of explaining to do. But they have a lot of practice for they nominate Steve Pearce over and over again.  Pearce is much like Trump.

STEVE PEARCE

The Center for America Progress analysis found that between January, 2013 and March, 2016, members of congress filed at least 44 bills or amendments that attempted to remove or undercut protection for parks and public lands – making the 114th Congress the most anti- conservation Congress in recent years.

In recognition of his work to sell off New Mexico (and our country’s) national parks and public lands, The Center for America Progress named Steve Pearce to the new Anti-parks Caucus. ( A caucus is a closed political meeting.)

PEARCE  DOESN’T BELIEVE IN BIG FORESTS AND NATIONAL PARKS!!

He believes that public lands should be turned back (not sold) to the states and private owners. He wants very much to reverse the trend of public ownership of land.

Pearce has a lifetime score of 5% pro-environment votes.  This means that he has a 95% anti-environment vote.

MONEY FROM BIG OIL

Steve Pearce has received $1.7 million from gas companies in campaign contributions.

So it’s no surprise that he is in favor of oil drilling on public lands and of off-shore drilling.

Steve Pearce tried to cheat American taxpayers out of Billions in oil royalties.

Pearce authored an amendment, an addition to a Department of Interior appropriation bill – how they pay for, among other thing, the Parks – that would have allowed oil drilling companies to continue not paying their proper share in royalties. It passed but was defeated by public review and outrage.

CLEAR CUTTING

Rep. Steve Pearce co-sponsored legislation that covers land seizure, attacks to the Antiquities Act, and legislation that makes logging much more important than recreation. He wants to open new areas to roads and clear cutting.

[Clear cutting means cutting down all he trees in an area.]

========================================================================================================================================================================================================================

From the Book of Common Prayer: A Prayer for Social Justice
Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that barriers that divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatred cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

How do Trump and Pearce measure up to ideas of the value of every individual - no discrimination, no suspicion, and no hatred - in this prayer?

TRUMP

He’s abrasive.  He doesn’t care if he is liked.  It could be difficult to have someone  like this represent us.

He embraces uninformed positions on finance.

He is a racist. On Twitter he made comments that black and Latino citizens commit most violent crime in major cities.

Diplomacy.  He is the opposite of a diplomat, loud and foul mouthed.

Military. The terrible trouble that Trump and a Republican dominated congress could do is unthinkable. This is really scary.

TRUMP THE WOULD-BE DICTATOR’S

FIRST HUNDRED DAYS IN OFFICE

Trumps says that he will do all the things listed below in his first 100 days. Fortunately, that is impossible, for the Constitution gives us all kinds of checks and balances. He could not do any of these things without the agreement of the Congress.

1. Appoint Supreme Court justices

2. Change immigration rules

Mr Trump has said undocumented immigrants in the US take jobs that US citizens could have.

Controversially, he has also said repeatedly - although not in this speech - that he would build a wall on the southern border that Mexico would pay for, to stop Mexico's criminals and rapists from coming to the US.

He also wants to ban Muslims from entering the country in an attempt to prevent terrorism, a move that has provoked fierce criticism from within his own party.

3. Lift energy and drilling restrictions

Mr Trump has said there should be less regulation of energy production and that the US should drill more for oil and gas. He said the country's energy potential remains "untapped".

4. Repeal Obamacare

Mr Trump has called Obamacare a disaster and that he pledges to repeal and replace it. He says it is a job-killer and ineffective.
Obamacare, which is actually the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, is President Barack Obama's signature law and aims to extend health insurance to those in the country that do not have it.

5. Punish firms that send jobs overseas

He has threatened to raise taxes on US-based companies that have moved operations overseas, like Pfizer, Ford and Nabisco.

6. Lower taxes for everyone

He said lowering taxes for all - businesses and people - would create millions of new jobs.

Mr Trump declared in his New York speech, wrongly, that the US has the highest taxes in the world. Politifact says it is actually ranked near the bottom among OECD countries.

His tax plan would not raise taxes on the top earners in the US.

7. Cancel trade rules with other countries

Trade deals with other countries are "killing" the country, he has said, and that he will defend the US against countries that "cheat" on trade like China.

A Prayer For Our CountryFrom the Book of Common Prayer

Almighty God who has given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly ask you that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought here from many nations.

Give wisdom to those whom in your Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, do not let  our trust in you  fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord . Amen.
